The Santa Ramona Chronicles

Editor's note:
This piece was originally printed on page 3 of the December 4th, 2005 Santa Ramona Chronicle in a weekly column named "Gabbin with God." Though Paster Emmerick is no longer with us; having passed not long after this was published, I think he would agree that sometimes to find a way forward we need to look back, so join me in revisiting Pastor Emmerick's final holiday column.

"Peace on Earth."

A frequent fixture of the holiday season are hopes, prayers, songs and discussion about Peace on Earth. What is it that the angels meant when they said "Peace on Earth?" This is something that I've thought about quite a bit since the day I was ordained. I recall reading an article in the New York Times about a Doctor from a Central African Republic who left his country to study medicine in France. After several decades as a physician, the article said “he decided to leave the peace and security of his life in France in order to bring much-needed medical care to the people of his h...

When we here in Santa Ramona think of Christmas, we think Santa, Elves, presents and trees. We love our sun and our sand but when the holiday’s come around I suspect we all get a little twinge in our heart when we think of what we won’t get… Snow. Well, a quick, easy drive inland and you can have your cake and eat it too at a cozy little Village occupied by the well shined jackboot of Santa and his Elves that might have the denizens of SRV thinking a little different when Chistmas time comes around, instead of thinking of Santa, Elves, presents and trees, we could simply be thinking of Winter Valley.

When you first enter Winter Valley it almost feels like another country. The Swiss Alps or the Swedish Sarektjåkkå. After you park the car and wander in to the heart of the village you’re greeted by a jolly Santa and enchanting sounds and smells. Across the square that sits in the center of the festivities is a four piece band who will really set the mood with trumpets, cello and drums. B...

Its time of year when you are out and about at festivities. Remember don't drink and drive and stay alive this holiday Season. SRSD

With the holidays coming up and the inevitable extra pounds we'll all pack on because of sugar cookies, drinks, and extra helpings of turkey, ham or standing rib roast the Santa Ramona Hospital and Hard Rock gym are coming to our rescue.

Santa Ramona General Hospital in partnership with Hard Rock Gym is doing a community outreach program to promote physical fitness and health. The idea is to have events at least once a month where people come together for different physical activities. Dr. Cris Chastain of SRGH spoke to me about this program.   "We've already had Yoga on the beach.  I'd like to do it outdoors as much as possible, weather permitting.  But we have some other classes planned... Boot Camp style calisthenics, Tai Chi... just fun things that are relatively low impact that will help build strength and flexibility.."

The events are meant to be social events where you can meet others while also promoting a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Chastain explained that exercising...

"At the end of the day we do not want to shoot anyone. Firing shots at civilians during some of the highly charged incidents we have to attended is not something the Sheriff's ever takes lightly, or something we ever want to do unless its necessary for the protection of members of the public or our personnel." said Undersheriff Brentt of SRSD. "However a large proportion of the time, when we arrive its already to late to avoid that outcome, things have escalated to far and gone beyond the point where other options may be available to us. The purpose of this campaign run in conjunction with the Mayor's office is to make the public aware, that often picking up the phone and dialing 911 at the very beginning of disagreements or situations can, quite bluntly, save lives."

"Whilst that might seem obvious there have been a lot of incidences that could of had very different endings, had someone called us earlier." he added "The Sheriff's Department is not and never will advocate that any membe...
